I heart New Orleans

It’s Valentine’s Day and I can’t help but to think of the love I have for New Orleans – our city is so diverse in its culture, music, food and even landscapes!

We have traditional New Orleans courtyards that Exterior Designs has become somewhat of a local legend for designing. We also get a lot of requests for outdoor patios, kitchens and comfortable areas to entertain guests when grilling, boiling crawfish or crabs, or hosting a fish fry. More recently, we have been asked to design meditation gardens. That’s right, a place where residents can get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and retreat to a relaxing, tranquil garden in their very own back yard. I think this trend is a result of our busy schedules – we’re running around town, working full-time, carting our children to after-school programs and when we get home we just want to UNWIND!

What makes a meditation garden different from any other garden?

Meditation spaces are designed with simplicity in mind, allowing the mind and body to relax. Instead of having many things to draw the eye towards, a more quiet approach is taken. We combine a soothing color palette with neatly pruned plants, bushes and shrubs. Often we use fountains or other water features in our designs to drown out the noises of the city. The idea is to make the setting serene, where the homeowner can sit back, relax and unwind from the stresses of their day.

Like any landscape, the meditation garden is designed to suite your taste. We’ve created Asian-inspired Zen gardens, modern retreats, tropical gardens and even a unique prayer garden for Touro Synagogue.

Beverly Katz of Exterior Design was an interior designer before realizing her talent for landscape architecture. Because of her background, her creations are an extension of her clients’ home. When Beverly visits a client for the initial consultation, what many don’t notice is she is taking note of their design aesthetic, drawing inspiration in how they have designed their interior.
